To elucidate the behavior of molten fuels as a liquid jet in a shallow pool, which is assumed in a core meltdown accident of an LWR, and develop the evaluation method, we investigated the behavior of the vortical liquid film of the simulated wall-impinging liquid jet using 3-dimensional interface shape data obtained by the experiment in a liquid-liquid system.

The atomization of a liquid jet in an immiscible liquid-liquid system is significant for the safety in the nuclear industry field. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has developed an evaluation method of a melt fuel behavior as a liquid jet in an immiscible liquid-liquid system for subsequence using mechanistic numerical simulation and has investigated liquid jet behavior in a shallow pool through numerical simulations and experiments. The paper clarifies the atomization mechanism in the wall-impinging liquid jet. Herein, the atomization behavior in the wall-impinging liquid jet in a shallow pool in an immiscible liquid-liquid system was studied in terms of droplet formation and flow field using numerical simulation and the dispersed-phase tracking method. The results show that the droplet formation in the liquid film flow of the wall-impinging liquid jet had the three patterns, and we obtained the droplet properties immediately after droplet formation and developed the theoretical criterion regions using the dimensionless numbers for droplet formation. We characterized the patterns by comparing them with the regions and elucidated the droplet formation mechanisms depending on their sources. Moreover, we elucidated that the relationship between droplet formation as the local behaviors of the jet and atomization as the whole behavior.

Corrosion of carbon steel in the simulated air/solution interface environment

Otani, Kyohei; Kato, Chiaki

Zairyo To Kankyo, 70(12), p.480 - 486, 2021/12

This is a comprehensive paper of the corrosion of carbon steel in air/solution alternating condition. From cross-sectional observation and analysis of the iron rust layer formed on the surface of carbon steel in the alternating condition, it was found that a multilayered iron rust layer composed of red rust layer ($$gamma$$-FeOOH), rust crust layer (Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$), inner crystal (Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$), and inner rust layer was formed on carbon steel. The multi-layered iron rust layer would accelerate the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction, and the reason why the corrosion rate of the carbon steel in the alternating condition was accelerated. The effect of artificial seawater (ASW) composition on the corrosion rate of carbon steel in air/solution alternating condition was investigated. It was found that the corrosion rate increased with increasing concentration from pure water to 200 times diluted ASW, and decreased with increasing concentration from 20 times diluted ASW to no diluted ASW. The Mg and Ca ions in ASW precipitated on the reaction interface and formed a metal cation layer, which inhibited the oxygen reduction reaction, and thus the corrosion of carbon steel was inhibited in the highly concentrated ASW.

Effect of seawater components on corrosion rate of steel in air/solution alternating condition

Zairyo To Kankyo, 69(9), p.246 - 252, 2020/09

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of artificial sea water concentration on the corrosion rate of carbon steel under air/solution alternating condition, and to clarify the corrosion mechanism of carbon steel that changes with artificial seawater concentration. Mass measurements showed that the corrosion rate of carbon steel in the alternating condition accelerates with increasing concentration in the concentration region between deionized water to 200 times diluted artificial seawater (ASW), and the corrosion rate decreases with increasing concentration in the concentration region between 20 times diluted ASW to undiluted ASW. It can be considered that the reason why the carbon steel corrosion was suppressed in highly concentrated artificial seawater would Mg ions and Ca ions in the artificial seawater precipitate and cover on the surface due to the increase in pH near the surface by oxygen reduction reaction.

Liquid film detection under boiling transition (BT) condition is one of the important issues to develop models on dry out and rewet including physical characteristics of liquid film behavior. Although a heater surface temperature has been often used in previous studies to detect the position of liquid film front, it is difficult to accurately identify the position from the temperature measurement. Therefore, we are developing a nonintrusive measurement technique for detecting thin liquid film thickness under BT and rewet condition using ultrasound. In this study, we focus on high accuracy measurement for liquid film thinner than 0.1 mm by using high frequency ultrasound of 15 MHz and developing a signal processing method. Liquid film measurement results were found to agree with liquid film thickness correlations. Based on a comparison with constant current method, it is concluded that the present technique gives more reasonable liquid film thickness than constant current method.
